where pays warmth
for coolth a generous toll
with fuax fur pelts
wintry games
inglenooks
and hibernations wild

for Mother Earth
Her pulse
Her breath
another rife testament
that She still lives

stir’d by voices
in peripheral eyes—
flinch and freeze
flinch and freeze—
blind palms to invisible walls
top to bottom
side to side
front to back
finding no way out—
despair’d back to stone
and frozen orbs—
till virgin curiosity approaches
nearer and nearer
only to gasp in brief horror
